I have been telling my friends this since I took a Marriage & The Family class in community college back in 2001. It truly makes a difference in a relationship, to have that commitment. You don't have to get married, but moving in together is a death penalty on a relationship. It may not end right away, but eventually, with the lack of commitment wearing away at you...the "what if's" always peeking around the corner, you will be unhappy. I have lived with two boyfriends before I lived with my 3third and final, and trust me, it wasn't until I married Alex, that I really felt comfortable and secure. I could have made it work with the 1st two if we were married. I really truly believe that. They were both good dudes in happy relationships now, but living together with no commitment in sight is what ruined it. Even an engagement can help, but there is always a doubt as to whether it will last. For me, I think that marriage is "'til death do us part" and I think most people believe that, whether they admit it or not. That binding of two people is a beautiful thing and should be taken seriously and with lot's of respect and selflessness, you can have a blossoming love affair for life. I really believe we can all make it happen. So, take the leap (with the right person) and you will see that the day after you are married, you will feel a huge weight lifted off of you. It's kind of like confession I think, I hope. I am told that confession is so freeing and I can't wait to be a part of it.

I am really glad that I joined the Junior League and that I get to do hands on things in the community. Today I went to Boys Town of North Florida and spent the morning having fun with the foster kids and cooking a healthy meal. It's hard to feel good about yourself for doing things like this, because I am just there for a couple of hours, but there are men and women who give their whole lives to these kids. They were such great kids, really polite and thankful, and you kind of have to be when you are in a situation like that. It is important that these kids know they are special and worth it, not just charity cases, but the same as every other kid in our country, they just need love and attention and respect. I know they put on a happy face for us when we are there, they are happy to see us, but we don't see the day to day lives of these kids. We don't know their rough histories and the deep hurt they feel. It is probably better that way, they don't want us to feel sorry for them. I want to go back, I don't want to be someone they are like " this lady is never gonna come back here". I am hoping to make it back there next time, to not be another disappointment for them. If you can donate your time or money to this organization, you should. It's a great organization full of love. If you can't give to them, then give to someone else, not just to make yourself feel good, but to make others feel good. That is what life is about and that is why god gave us a voice and hands...to share and help with others.

I know I don't post enough about music on this blog, since "the child", my music has suffered greatly. I do however, get amazing lessons emailed, for free, from this awesome blog I found a long time ago Not Playing Guitar. I may not always utilize his lessons, although I should, especially since I haven't taken lessons for a couple of years now. I do miss my mentor/teacher/friend Fred Cantor, but the Not Playing Guitar blog is an awesome site for free lessons. FREE! Not many good things in life are free these days (woe is me) and you should check out this site if you are an aspiring or current guitar player.

My creativity is important and is a necessary and natural process that I should be enjoying and cultivating daily. Here's the Beaut

I don't want to jinx it...but we have a new home in the works. I haven't been blogging much because I have been so busy day-dreaming about my new house. We had a few we were thinking about, this one didn't need much repair and it also has this really cute 1960's charm to it. We both love an older home. I'm so vintage. It's not huge by any means, bigger is not always better in a house...too much to clean. I can hardly sleep at night because I want this deal to work out, I want to be moved in and I especially can't wait for my mom, in-laws and best friend to be down helping and celebrating Serena's 2nd birthday, all in the same week. It's going to be a busy next few weeks, especially since I have choir, my Artist's Way group, Junior League and softball commitments, among other things. Life is busy right now, but in a good way. My friend Christina told me that this year in the chinese zodiac is all about big changes and last year was supposed to be about contemplation. Hearing that, I think the chinese really know what's up. Last year was my first year here in Tallahassee and I spent a lot of time contemplating how I want my life to go. This year we are getting a house and making big changes to simplify our home life. I can't wait to get into this hizzy and make it my beeeeeotch.

It made me bawl my eyes out.
It's a radio broadcast that my grandma is singing in as a little girl. In the background at the end is my great-grandfather's voice (I lived with him until I was 16, he passed when I was 27) and also my great-grandma Helen's voice (I have fond memories of her, she passed when I was in Kindergarten). It's just such a cool recording and I miss hearing their voices.

...in under 3 months! Actually, I read it in about a week. I read The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. It was so good I could barely put it down and when I did I had to pick it back up as soon as possible. It's about Ernest Hemingways' first marriage, mostly set in Paris in the 20's. I won't go into detail, but it is just so well written that I couldn't see how anyone wouldn't like it.
Superb. If I had 3 thumbs, I would give it that...straight up.

Free Wine Tasting...I'm in!

One more reason I love Tallahassee. Tonight I went to the free wine tasting at New Leaf Market, which is a co-op grocery in town. It's not my scene, but I like free wine and I my life consists of playing with a 2 year old...so I was DOWN. None of my mom friends, single friends, women's group friends would go. Suck it. Here's what happened (in pics cause I'm buzzed)

Yesterday, Alex, Googs and I went to the park to play with our new Rock Crawler remote controlled car, and it was a lot of fun for all. This stoner kid came walking by (there are a lot of them in the woods at Tom Brown Park) and he was laughing at Serena chasing the RC car. He then lingered awhile and mumbled some shit, and then Alex was like "alright, see ya later" and the stoner was like "yeah...ahhhh...ya'll have a good 4th of July and stuff".

I baked some Christmas cookies tonight but couldn't finish them because I had a needy 21 month old and I was late for my RCIA and choir practice. I had purchased a reusable icing bag and 6 tips for less than $10, as a present to myself, so I wouldn't be embarrassed about my "poop" cookies (see previous post on xmas cookies). Anyway, I left Alex the icing and bag and told him he could have the first "ice". I came home to little xmas works of art :) I am so proud he maneuvered the icing bag, better than I would have. He even said he did some of them one-handed.

My new book idea...

...well, she at least has a better chance. We had Serena baptized yesterday. It was all very exciting! Serena did the exact opposite of most children, she screamed and squirmed and fought UNTIL the water and oil parts, and where most babies cry at those moments, she was like "WTF....I am NOT moving or saying a word right now". Fear of god, ladies and gentleman. I had joked with some people that this would be more like an exorcism than a baptism. She was as good as a 20 month old could be. We had a great dinner at one of our favorite spots that Tally doesn't have, Bahama Breeze. Serena got some beautiful gifts and we PROMISE that we will light the candle on the anniversary of her baptism, to remind her to be nice, not naughty. It was also a special day because she had it on the first day of advent. Keeping it simple here. My brother took 100000000000 pictures, but here are just a few.

Anyway, I did a book swap today at the recycling event and I brought some awesome books, in exchange for these not so awesome books. I got this book, Country Woman Christmas Volume 1 (like there needs to be more of them...hahahahaha) and it's circa...mmmmmm.....maybe 1979? My guess is '79 since my mom had hair like this then...wait...is this my mom!?!?!?! Wait, that's NOT my daddy! AHHHHH! I am drunk. Anyway, I am way too entertained by this book and this picture right here is what Alex and I will look like for Christmas this year. Why can I not find a good blog post on "His and Hers Vests add Vivid style to Season?". Why? Because this book has the monopoly. They did it, and they know they own it.

the Artist's Way Week 1

My first week is done. This is my weekly check-in, a must do for the process.

How many days this week did I do my morning pages?

Well, I actually did "mid-afternoon" pages, since Serena naps then and I am too lazy to get up early and do them. Not a good start for my creative process. I think I did it 5 days, and 2 of those nap times, I wrote exercises, so that counts for 7 right?

Did you do your artist date?

Nope. Date myself? Aren't I already narcissistic enough? Actually, all kidding aside, I meant to. I guess I could still do it tonight, but I know I won't. I WANT to have a date with myself. That is the part of this process I was most excited about. An excuse to spend time by myself, on myself. Ugh. Next week I'll get em'.

Were there any other issues this week that you consider significant in your recovery?

Well, the one exercise was to time travel to 3 of my creative enemies of the past. After much consideration, I decided that my 3 enemies were me, myself and I. I am sure that's not original. I really can't blame anyone for my creative faults except myself. No one really told me I sucked, I told myself. I need to get over my fear of rejection, but to do that I am supposed to lay blame and solve it...but I even suck at that.

Also, another exercise was to list 5 other lives and what I would do in them.

I picked Rockstar (which I would become famous), pro-golfer (which I would become famous and drink all day), world renowned chef (which I would become famous and eat and drink all day), filmmaker (this one I wouldn't be famous until I died) and pirate (which I would be the hottest pirate and be famous and have a pet parrot). All of these awesome lives were reflections of me and my creativity. I actually wrote much more down, I am just giving you the synopsis. Wow. I am pretty good at this...lol. This journey really seems to be opening me up in great ways (insert sarcasm here).

New Journeys

I am excited to announce that I am not only embarking on my catholic journey, which has been underway for a few months now, but I am also going down the path of creative enlightenment. My best friend has purchased the Artist's Way by Julia Cameron for me, for my birthday.

I am ready to get the juices pouring, gushing and drowning my brain with ideas. It's a 12 week process. Let's see if we can stick to it and most importantly, if it WORKS.

I had the idea yesterday, speaking with my friend Renee, about how I can't wait for "pirates to be the new vampires". So, with my lack of knowledge in fictional writing, I am going to try to write a "twilighty" book about current day pirates.

It may not ever happen. It's just and idea. Maybe this 12 week process will help. I am going to post updates on here, so get ready for some boring posts. You may want to stay away for the next 12 weeks. I am hoping that I can maybe not half-ass this, like I do most things in my life. There's that quote about doing many things ok, but nothing really good, something like that. That's me. I am trying though, and that's what counts.

Last night I had my writing group meeting, we had a great group of writers and our prompt was to rewrite a fairytale, basically. So here was mine. I am pretty proud of myself for banging this out.
I am posting the original first, since most of us and probably you too, have not heard the full horrific original story.

Prompt: Use a nursery rhyme character, and rewrite the story with that character’s point of view.

Little Bo Peep story

Little Bo peep has lost her sheep
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone and they'll come home,
Bringing their tails behind them.
Little Bo peep fell fast asleep
And dreamt she heard them bleating,
But when she awoke, she found it a joke,
For they were all still fleeting.
Then up she took her little crook
Determined for to find them.
She found them indeed, but it made her heart bleed,
For they left their tails behind them.
It happened one day, as Bo peep did stray
Into a meadow hard by,
There she espied their tails side by side
All hung on a tree to dry.

A couple of years ago, I went to the big hair show in Orlando with my mom, she's a hairdresser/beautician/whatever you call it now. The big thing that year was the Ken Paves and Jessica Simpson Hair extensions. Of course we had to have some. Since I am hair retarded, my mom always had to put them in for me. I seriously sucked at it. That fad went by the wayside. I have had 4 expensive hair extensions shoved in my jewelry box for the last few years. As you may or may not know, I am a member of a playdate group. A bunch of moms and their babies/toddlers/kids meet at a house/park/event and kill time. I love all the moms. Some are so different than me, personality or lifestyle, but that makes conversations so interesting. I love how diverse we all are. Most though, are pretty conservative. Not that that's bad. Maybe they aren't at all, maybe they are closet freaks and just don't want the other moms to know. Anyway, I was joking with a couple of friends outside of the group, about slutty costumes. My one conservative friend I went costume shopping with, was visibly perturbed by the sluttiness of the costumes. I have no room to talk, I love the slutty ones, especially when I was pregnant and vowed to be the sluttiest halloween vixen ever, once the baby was out. So, we have a halloween party for the kids planned. It's on a weekday in the middle of the day, just moms and kids, hanging out eating candy and being silly. I was joking that it would be awesome if I showed up is a super slutty costume. How great would that be, me walking in with all these moms dressed in their sweats and babies in cute costumes, and here I am....all slutted up. Like "hey guys, what's up". Hey, I think it's funny. Here are just a few of my awesome new friends that I have made in my new town. I am coming closer and closer to NOT missing home (Orlando) at all. With the exception of a few friends, I feel like people back home have given up on me. Moving on. I get a little pissed about it, but then I remember all of my new, even more awesome friends and I say "F it". I shouldn't get upset about people moving on. I moved on. I try to keep in touch, and this last time I went down for my 30th birthday, only a few friends showed up, whom I love a lot, but I was surprised that more people didn't come. I am glad that I had a week-late birthday night out in my new town, because I was reminded how much I have grown to love Tallahassee. I thought I would never adapt, but alas, I have. I have arrived. This will be my last weekend in my 20's. That went fast. The other day I was thinking about how this 10 years went by so fast, and I really have only accomplished something at the end of it, getting married and having Googs. I basically just partied my ass off for the first 3 quarters of it. That's what you are supposed to do. Party like it's 1999, from 1999 to 2011. I am not scared or sad or depressed about turning 30. I don't want anymore wrinkles or spots on my face, but other than that, I am excited to see what my 30's bring. I feel more comfortable and secure with myself than I did when I was 20. I have Googs to keep me company 24/7. I have a super hot husband that cooks me elaborate meals on a daily basis. I think this decade will rock. So, happy birthday to me! I have to go get my fake tan on now while Googs is napping. Holla!

So here are some of Goo Goo's Favorite things:

Favorite Color: I used to think orange because she always picked the orange pieces of toys out. I now think it is anything colored like a cat. If a cat colored thing passes by, usually it's a cat, and she's gotta have it. So the color of cat.

Favorite food: Let's see...she really eats the heck out of blueberries. She also likes pulled pork like little Maeve. She went through a bacon phase where she would suck the bacon dry of salt then spit it out. Wait! Now I know. She loves pasta. Pasta pasta pasta. She can scarf down some ravioli.

Favorite toy: we just got a slide we brought home to put in our living room. She likes that a lot. Goo Goo has always loved things that aren't toys, like most kids. She used to like these halloween shot glasses. She really enjoys this Jeff Foxworthy book about "you know you're old when...". She carries it everywhere. Her baby dolls are important too.

Serena's Favorite Adult: Besides me and Alex, she really like Jennifer, my chinese friend. She thinks all chinese women are Jennifer, and she loves them. Jennifer is cool because she plays with Serena, I think she can tell that she is a kid at heart and actually enjoys the company of an 18 month old.

Serena's Favorite Sesame Street Character: Hands down, Cookie monster. She loves elmo. What kid doesn't? Cookie monster kind of makes her scared and happy and she is really into that "on the edge" feeling. Like, Cookie is always cracked out looking for another cookie. Serena likes that. I guess I have to watch out for her dating years, you know, liking the druggies.

Serena is so funny. She was cracking me up today. I called my mother-in-law, just to tell her how funny her granddaughter was. I mean, she was funny to me and you probably had to be there.

She had taken my keys to play with yesterday or the day before. I let her. This morning I could not find my keys (big surprise...why is there an "r" in surprise...that looks wrong). I tried to make a fun game out of searching for the keys. Now, my keys are big, Alex always complains about the amount of shit I have on my keychain. So we were crawling around and looking under furniture for lengthy amounts of time and opening drawers and so on. I kept asking Serena "where are my keys?" and she would hold her arms up with disbelief and say "KEYS!". Then she would lean down and look under the piece of furniture and I would be right in her face and she was just looking at me like, "what are we doing here?" She is so silly. Alex found them finally in a diaper bag in the closet that we only use on vacations. Does someone need a vacation? Is someone trying to tell Mommy something? I think so.

Needless to say, I ended up with about 200 shitty blogs that I followed and their shitty posts that show up in my reader...clouding the good/great blogs that I actually enjoy reading. Alex, Serena and I went to the park this morning. We were walking over to the lake/bridge area from the parking lot, past the playground. These 3 chicks that are about my age, looking like they were gonna work out (and they did) are walking behind us. Here's what they say:
"Man, so much for us having the playground to ourselves" (with annoyance)
then "Yeah, it's like daycare day out here" (lot's of sarcasm)
then "well, maybe they'll leave soon" (this is at like 10:30am on a gorgeous saturday)
then "I doubt it, kids can last a LONG time".

My problem with this conversation.
#1 It's a F&*#^T# park PEOPLE! A PLAYGROUND for KIDS!
#2 It's a saturday. The OPPOSITE of daycare day. That is why they are at the park, and not daycare.
#3 WTF do they want with a playground?

Maybe people would be a lot happier and friendlier if we all kept up the positive reinforcement for doing the little things, like we do for our children. For instance, your co-worker takes a crap. When they come back, you say "Good job! You went potty! I am so proud of you!". Or, your spouse holds up a shirt, and you are like "that's right! SH-I-RRR-Ta!" That is a shirt!". Always encouraging for the little stuff, from birth to death. Keeping it up.

Step 1 forward: My mom shelac-ed my toe/finger nails. It is amazing. It's like super polish that doesn't come off. You paint it on and zap the shit with a super cool laser beam.

Step forward 2: My mom bought me a new strapless bra. My old ones were falling off and made me look like this (sorry Drew). It's a much needed lift, pun intended.

Step back 1: I took back my DVR and switched to basic cable. I now get PBS, PBS and one more I forgot....oh, PBS.

Step back 2: I ate a crap load of spaghetti and I feel like...a load of crap.

People are always telling me that Tallahassee is so small. I am starting to catch on. I like to think Tallahassee is like a web, a super spiderman web (can you tell I was around little boys at today's playdate). All these bugs and shit keep getting stuck in the web and it's so full and all the bugs know the bug next to them, who buzzed around with the bug a couple of inches away and they all are connected...basically because they are stuck. It has been a really long time since I have written an application, unless you include the application I filled out to have my baby. Which I flubbed. Don't ask. I am attempting to join the Junior League of Tallahassee . I know I don't really fit the description of a member, but I would like to be! Is that sad? Since moving here to small town Tallahassee and having left all of my friends behind, I feel the DEEP YEARNING to take over Tallahassee...since it is so small and I am such a badass. Seriously though, I want to start helping out my community and making more friends and meeting new people with kids that Serena can throw things at. I tried my best to make myself sound awesome. It was hard. If you know me, you know how awesome I am, but ask me about my professional affiliations and past do-gooderness (yes I said that word) and I am at a loss. Doesn't it count that I want to be a better person for my community? I think so. I mean, I was captain of my freshman cheerleading squad! Alex assured me that if they didn't accept me, we could burn the place down. He has a sick humor. So, JLT....accept me for who I am...just accept me....you'll see how awesome I am.

Boredom Cupcakes

Twice this week I made cupcakes out of boredom. I got rained in. I was trying to not eat as much food as I usually do, in hopes that I can stop feeling bloated. Instead, I made cupcakes...and ate a lot of them. Cupcakes = yummy little bitches.

I feel like a poser. My blog is supposed to have 3 components; motherhood, music and beer. I have plenty of motherhood up in this mug. A lot of the time I am downing a beer while posting. Where is the music? I have a wall of sad, dusty guitars waiting to be played. My keyboard is M.I.A. My protools program crapped out almost two years ago. I bought a new blank music notebook that I have written one chord in...in the last year. To give myself a little slack, sometimes I write lyrics, but they never get put to chords. Most days I find myself watching music videos, vocal talent shows, or listening to new music on itunes...and I think "I can do that shit". I am such a poser though. When I started this blog I thought it would force me to make music, then I could share it with all of you. When Googs goes down for her nap, I always plan to make some music. I never do. Can I have a June-years resolution? I resolve to write a song...sometime....soon....maybe....when I have the time....oh what the F$#@....I am a poser. You heard it here. I am suckety suck suck. Where is all the inspiration and drive I had a couple of years ago? Gone. Gone with the wind. Poor Renee. Pity party time. Pity me people. PITY ME! I am making a vow, not of silence (that has gone on long enough), but I vow that I WILL compose a song, however shitty it may be, by the end of July. You think I won't do it? We'll see. YOU'LL see.

I ran my first 5K yesterday. Alex was like "you didn't even make a big deal about it". My friend Renee asked if I wanted to do it, I was like "sure, I'll run 3.1 miles with one week to train". Unfortunately I got a cold on day 1 of 7. I sucked it up and ate Motrin like candy. I ran 1.8 and walked the rest while pushing Serena around a lake downtown on day 1 and 2. I thought I would die. Day 3, Wednesday, I went with Renee to a park and walked/half ass jogged a few miles, we didn't keep track. At that point in the week my calves and shins felt like someone was constantly smacking then with a razor bladed baseball bat. More Motrin please. Thursday I was getting nervous and not any less sore but I make myself run the 3.1 on the treadmill while forcing myself to not look down at the distance. I looked down when I thought it would be like 2.5 miles...nope, it was 1.5. I was in for it. I stretched really hard and ate lot's of ice-cream. Friday I was sore but we went to pick-up our packets and walked the trails at the park where the race was. "Woah woah Renee" I said, "I didn't know we would be running through these narrow dangerous rooted and rocked trails". The edge of the stream is awfully close. That night I stretched a ton more and ate lot's of ice cream. It was a surprise that I did not feel sore saturday morning. The Motrin was working by golly! I didn't feel anything but numbness in my freezing fingers. It was a gorgeous morning, nice and cool so I wouldn't pass out. I got warm quick. I ran the whole thing and now I can't wait to do it again. "Piece of cake", or should I say "bowl of ice cream".

I have come down with a nasty case of homesickness. Medicine...Coors Light. Today is such a beautiful day, pristine blue skies, got to sleep in a little, husband and baby in tow, but I can't seem to truly enjoy it because I have this dull sadness knowing that home is out of reach. I know if I were sitting in Orlando right now I would be bored and hot and none of my friends or family would be around, but I still miss it. The beer is helping a little. It's so hard when you live your whole life in one place. It's like, now that I have a family, meaning husband and baby, THIS is the time I should be around those I love. I feel like I wasted all that time I could have moved away and sowed oats by staying at home. Now I want to be home and I am not. There is no choice in the matter, Alex's job is here. My life is here now. I love it here, most days. I need to suck it up and enjoy the rest of my day. Alex and the baby are napping. It's a great day. I need to snap out of it. SNAP BITCH SNAP.
Ok. I'm better. I think I just needed to vent a little.

Also, I watched The FIghter last night with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. GOOD MOVIE! I see why it won so many awards.

So I'm watching Regis and Kelly's "The World's Greatest Love Story" week, they basically do a story, every day this week, on a couple they chose that has "The Greatest Love Story". OK. You guys know me by now, I am a total sap...along with being a total cynic. I'm watching these stories crying my eyes out while rolling them at the same time. It's like, can't they pick a normal couple, one that says "hey, we met at a bar, got drunk, fucked, and then had a rocky couple of years, until we finally decided, "Hey we can't see ourselves fighting with anyone else, and we think at this point we can't do better"...and now we are married. Where are those stories? It always has to be these heart-wrenching, literally unbelievable stories. It reminds me of my best friends wedding I just went to in Mexico. Everyone was so into their "love" and how amazing they are and uplifting...it was great...but also a little too much. No one in perfect. I like to know the dirt, the really shitty stuff. That is what makes "The Greatest Love Story". To deal with anyone's shit, to spend your life with one person, to have a normal relationship with no sob stories or horrible accidents...that is love, just living one boring day to the next, like 99% of the population.

Wedding Crasher

My best friend came into town, it was sort of a surprise and definitely needed. Alex is a week away from his bar exam...one week until I can relax with my husband, since...4 years ago. Anyway, Andrea came up here to Tallahassee and I planned some bridal appointments for her to try on dresses. I got so excited after I told Alex because this is my last chance to have this memory. All of my best friends are married. My other best friend, Chrissy (who's wedding we just went to in Mexico) lives in DC, so I couldn't go with her when she found "the one"...the dress, not the man. I was sad. So, thank angel Andrea for giving me this opportunity that I was craving. It sucks cause I found my dress the first day I looked, the second shop, and it went so quick. That's a good thing though. If you don't know this about me, I am a HUGE wedding fan. I am literally addicted to weddings. When I get an invitation it's like crack...no...meth. That's worse. I think weddings are the greatest moment of our lives. What, having babies is better you say? Oh, let me see, popping a baby out of your vag does not qualify as the best day. It was necessary to have my best friend, but not fun. Not fun at all. Anyway, I love weddings and I am so stoked to be the maid of honor, the only lady by her side (no other bridesmaids!!) and I am stoked to party like a rockstar and make an ass out of myself on their greatest moment/day.
