Writing Group Prompt January 2012

This month's writing prompt is short and simple and a very good exercise. For the poets among us, you could adapt this to write a poem about the object: Look around the room and pick an object. Write one paragraph describing the object in full detail and a second paragraph explaining where it came from.
POEM
All pink, like her.
Soft on all sides.
Arms that cradle you
and make you feel large.
Perfect size for her, perfect fit.
Her name embroidered,
stains of youth accruing.
Wrinkling and fading in time.
Read me a story.
“Book, Book, Book!”
Sit in my lap and let time stand still,
let this moment linger.
Soon you will not fit,
a chair stowed lifeless and faded
in a useless room.

****My poem was about Serena's chair, it's a pink little couch that has her name embroidered on it.

Blast from my Family's Past

My mom emailed this recording to me..."brought to you by the Willis Mayo Family".
It made me bawl my eyes out.
It's a radio broadcast that my grandma is singing in as a little girl.  In the background at the end is my great-grandfather's voice (I lived with him until I was 16, he passed when I was 27) and also my great-grandma Helen's voice (I have fond memories of her, she passed when I was in Kindergarten).  It's just such a cool recording and I miss hearing their voices.
Nostalgia is my favorite feeling.

I Voice the Universe in an Original Way

I bring to life a unique and powerful voice. My insights and perceptions are important blessings. Voicing my insights and perceptions is important to the world. I am an irreplaceable individual whose gifts benefit all. Owning my gifts, inhabiting and expanding them are my gifts to the world and those with whom I share it. As I become larger, more colorful and more truly myself, I create for others the realization that it is safe for them to become larger, more vibrant, more fully alive. Moving upward and outward in a spirit of creative community, I am noncompetitive and truly collaborative, growing larger myself while helping others to achieve their true size as well. The cosmic web is alive with greater and greater consciousness, larger and brighter possibilities. As I extend my hand in my immediate world, I alter and enlarge the benevolence of the world as a whole. My every action is sweet and significant. Knowing this, I consciously and creatively act for the highest good. My unique voice and consciousness bless all.

Blonde Moment

A conversation with my oh so funny husband yesterday:

me (reading a non-fiction children's book on frogs to Serena): "this book says frogs have lived for 200 million years on earth...has earth even been around that long?"

Alex (very seriously):  "no, Renee, frogs aren't from earth, they are aliens from another planet".

Hmmmmmmm.

I finished a book...

...in under 3 months!  Actually, I read it in about a week.  I read The Paris Wife by Paula McLain.  It was so good I could barely put it down and when I did I had to pick it back up as soon as possible.  It's about Ernest Hemingways' first marriage, mostly set in Paris in the 20's.  I won't go into detail, but it is just so well written that I couldn't see how anyone wouldn't like it.
Superb.  If I had 3 thumbs, I would give it that...straight up.

Free Wine Tasting...I'm in!

One more reason I love Tallahassee.  Tonight I went to the free wine tasting at New Leaf Market, which is a co-op grocery in town.  It's not my scene, but I like free wine and I my life consists of playing with a 2 year old...so I was DOWN. None of my mom friends, single friends, women's group friends would go.  Suck it.   Here's what happened (in pics cause I'm buzzed)
the 1st wine, a sauvignon blanc...really strong fruity and oaky

just saw this while trying not to socialize, thought it was my style

2nd wine, I am socializing now, the people are cool, this tastes good

this line was way long and crowded and the kid wasn't drinking

I admitted to the dude I had no idea what Prosecco was, basically it's champagne

New Leaf, how appropriate that it's blurry :)

you know me, I went home with some beers.
The End.
BTW.  It's poker night with the neighbors....watch out now!

Guess the time of the month
